Former public works contractor turned his idea for a hilltop resort on the outskirts of Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, into one of the world’s most successful casino resorts. His First World Hotel has 6,200 rooms, which earned it the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest hotel. In December 2006 his company Genting beat rivals to win the project to develop a high-end gaming and entertainment resort on the Singaporean island of Sentosa. Its $3.4 billion bid was said to be the lowest on the table. Plans for the resort include a Universal Studios theme park and a maritime museum. The group began 2007 by breaking into the Macau gaming market through a joint venture deal with the territory’s gaming king, Stanley Ho. Retired, has handed reins over to son Lim Kok Thay.
